What do men wear black dress shirts with?

smash asked:
I’m trying to help a friend build up an office wardrobe. We got him a really great black shirt, with a subtle self-print of vertical lines. But what color trousers go with black shirts? I can’t seem to find many pictures. Do guys wear black shirts with black pants? It didn’t go as well with his brown pants as I thought it would. Any suggestions?

Yeah - the brown was a bad idea, definately.
Black can look good with khaki pants (The typical khaki tan). You could also wear the black dress shirt with cream (Off-white) dress pants.. Depending on the blue, it could also go with blue. Black on black is also fine. Avoid the brown. Light gray with black shoes to match the shirt would look really good - don’t go too dark on the gray though, or it could end up looking off.
If they have like a casual friday of something - it would look good with jeans.

Adam’s answer is good. I wear black shirts with gray, also and nice black jeans with boots (I live in a Rocky Mt. state). Disagree with the white shoes strongly and white tie a bit. The white tie is too formulaic and too much contrast. I have a solid red tie that looks great, but any color except some browns look good on a black shirt. Again-I agree with Adam. I wear them to court with various suits and a bold tie.
